Cheat sheet
Amazon image guidelines, on one page
Every spec you need before you upload: file types, pixel sizes, the main image rules that get listings suppressed, what belongs in each secondary slot, and the A+ Content module sizes. Written by the team that designs these images every day.
Technical specs at a glance
These apply to every image in the main gallery.
File formats
JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg) preferred · PNG, TIFF and non-animated GIF also accepted
Colour mode
sRGB. Export from Photoshop in sRGB, not CMYK — CMYK files shift colour on Amazon
Size for zoom
1600 px or more on the longest side. Below that, shoppers lose the zoom tool
Safe working size
2000 × 2000 px square. Big enough for zoom, small enough to stay under the file limit
Hard limits
1000 px minimum for zoom to work at all · 10,000 px maximum on the longest side · under 10 MB per file
Shape
Square (1:1) is safest. The gallery crops to a square thumbnail, so a wide image loses its edges
File name
Product identifier plus extension, for example B0XXXXXXXX.MAIN.jpg. No spaces in the name
How many
Most categories allow up to 9 images; roughly 7 show in the gallery (6 if a video is present)
Main image: the rules that suppress listings
This is the one Amazon checks hardest. A single violation can pull the listing out of search.
Must have
- Pure white background, RGB 255, 255, 255
- Product fills 85% or more of the frame
- Real photograph of the actual product
- Whole product in frame, in focus, evenly lit
- Accurate colour and true proportions
Must not have
- Text, badges, banners or price stickers
- Logos or watermarks that are not on the product
- Borders, frames or drop shadows on the edge
- Props or extra items you are not selling
- Packaging, unless the pack is the product
- Mannequins for most categories, illustrations or renders passed off as photos
Colour picker check: open the main image, sample three corners of the background. If any reads 254 or lower, it is off-white and can fail the check. A pure 255 background also lets Amazon blend the image seamlessly into the white gallery.
What to put in each secondary slot
Secondary images allow text, graphics and branding. This running order sells the best in most categories.
2Hero featureThe single biggest reason to buy, as one clear callout over the product.
3Feature infographicThree to four benefits, short labels, no paragraphs.
4LifestyleThe product in use, with the buyer’s world around it.
5Size and scaleDimensions, or the product next to a familiar object.
6What is in the boxEvery component laid out, so nobody guesses.
7Trust or comparisonMaterials, certifications, or your model line-up.
Mobile is where the sale happens, so design for the thumbnail first: text no smaller than about 4% of the image height, high contrast, and no more than six words per callout.
A+ Content module sizes
The modules brands use most. Standard A+ images stay under 2 MB each; Premium allows more.
Image header with text
970 × 600 px
Three or four image + text
300 × 300 px per image
Four image quadrant
135 × 135 px per image
Comparison chart
150 × 300 px per product
Company logo
600 × 180 px
Brand Story hero
1464 × 625 px
Premium full width
1464 × 600 px · video from 1280 × 720 px
Format
JPEG for photography, PNG for graphics and text · RGB · keep each file under 2 MB
Five mistakes we see every week
- Off-white background at 250–254 instead of 255, usually from a phone photo or a soft studio light.
- Product floating small in the frame — under the 85% fill, so it looks weak next to competitors in search.
- Text baked into the main image, most often a discount badge or a brand tagline.
- Uploads under 1600 px, so the zoom tool never appears and shoppers cannot inspect the product.
- Infographic text sized for desktop, unreadable on the phone where most of the traffic is.
Before you upload
- Main image on true white, product at 85% or more of the frame.
- Longest side 1600 px or more, file under 10 MB, sRGB.
- Square crop, product centred, nothing touching the edges.
- No text, logo, watermark or border on the main image.
- Secondary images cover feature, lifestyle, size, contents and trust.
- All claims match your listing copy and are ones you can back up.
- Every image checked at thumbnail size on a phone.
- A+ modules exported at their exact module size, each under 2 MB.
Amazon changes these rules without much notice, and some categories add their own. Before a launch, check the image requirements in Seller Central Help for your category.
